Sleep Issues Are Common During Pregnancy – Tips on How to Sleep When Pregnant

During pregnancy, women struggle to find the most comfortable position before falling asleep. When you are pregnant, your body goes through many changes, including causing irregular sleep, making it hard for you to find regular sleeping positions. A lot of recommendations are given to you from your doctor, but it seems like it’s impossible to consider them, especially in the third trimester of pregnancy. Sleeping on your side appears to be safer for the baby, but how do you feel? Many women become anxious and depressed because they can’t rest at night nor during the day. Researchers have found that sleeping on your back while pregnant is reliable. Let’s see some of the reasons why your sleeping positions no longer work for you.

Best sleeping positions

“SOS” (sleep on side) is the best position for pregnant women. Why is this reliable? Because when you sleep on the side (left one most preferable), you allow your blood and nutrients to reach the placenta and your baby. Use a pillow between your legs will keep your knees bent, helping you relieve stress and enjoy your sleep. Back pain is also a common issue for pregnant women. Use the SOS position and even place a pillow under your tummy to make yourself comfortable. During pregnancy, you might experience shortness of breath, so it’s not recommended to sleep on your back, as this will cause you to wake up many times during the night. These might not be the most comfortable suggestions, but it’s worth trying them out. They might work for you. Also, keep in mind that the mattresses and pillows you use have a lot to do with your sleep quality. To experience an excellent nightly sleep while pregnant, make sure you use the best mattress and pillow.

What sleeping positions to avoid?

Ever since you’re pregnant, your body seems to experience many problems that cause insomnia, back pain, heartburn, shortness of breath, and other complications. Trying to find the right position to sleep seems impossible, but maybe avoiding these sleeping positions might help you avoid putting pressure on your fetus.

  • Sleeping on your belly
  • Sleeping on your right side
  • Sleeping on your back

Steps to sleep better while pregnant

Sleeping helps your body recover and it’s more important than ever to get quality sleep while pregnant. That said, consider these steps to sleeping better during your pregnancy:

  • Drink a lot of water throughout the day.
  • Exercise for thirty minutes; it’ll help you sleep better. (But avoid powerful workouts)
  • Use relaxing techniques, such as a warm bath, or a massage.
  • Limit caffeine, or don’t drink at all. Instead, consume tea.
  • Create a peaceful environment in your bedroom. Keep a quiet and relaxing atmosphere, it’ll help you fall asleep faster.
  • Do not consume unhealthy meals, no matter the time of the day.

The vast majority of pregnant women have problems sleeping, so try not to stress out too much and use the strategies above to get the right amount of sleep. If you lack sleep, it’s best to talk to your healthcare specialist. They can help you solve your problem and finally get the rest needed.

Choosing to have a child via surrogacy can sometimes prove to be a difficult choice. In the last few years, the Ukraine has proven its dependability in business of surrogacy. With progressive legislation, excellent medical care, and lower costs, it has become a go to choice for couples across the globe. We talked to two couples and a surrogate mother for the inside scoop on what exactly to expect with surrogacy in Ukraine

Chris and Megan Doucy

Chris (38) and Megan (33) had been married for four years. Their relationship had started in high school. “I’ve known him forever” Megan laughs. “He was a friend of my older brothers and I had always kind of had a crush on Chris. He would always be hanging out at our house and I would do anything to find little excuses to hang out with the boys.”

“Her brother hated it” Chris jumps in, smiling.

“By the time I got to college, he just wasn’t on my radar anymore, I was so busy with school.” Megan then recalls when she had to come back to their hometown to help take care of her ailing mother. She ran into Chris at the local grocery store and they “just started talking”. Their relationship continued over the next few months and a year and a half later they were married. “That was four years ago and nothing has changed for me” Megan says, “he’s exactly the person I want to be with in my life”. A few years following their marriage, Megan and Chris decided that they wanted to try for a baby. After months of trying, it seemed like it would never work out, and then one day “the little stick was blue! I’ve never been so excited in my life. I immediately called Chris at work”

“My foreman actually gave me the day off” Chris remembered even his co-workers being excited for it, as he “couldn’t stop talking about it. It was so important for us to have a child. We were ready, and we knew that we were made to be parents.”

Several months into the pregnancy, Megan became ill and they lost their child. “I was absolutely devastated. I couldn’t come out of my room, or go to work. It was horrible.” Chris doesn’t comment here, but instead lovingly rubs a hand over Megan’s back and nods. “We thought about trying again” he finally chokes out, “but it was too hard for us, the thought of…   you know, it not working.” A friend of the family suggested that they look into surrogacy. “For us that was absolutely the best option” he continues, “for Megan’s health and both of our happiness. We decided to go through a surrogate agency that was from the Ukraine because it’s really smooth. The Ukrainian legislation surrounding it makes great sense and they have amazing medical care for the surrogate mothers” So Megan and Chris took the plunge. Nine months later they have a beautiful, healthy, and happy baby girl, Adeline. “She’s my everything” Megan gushes, holding the child gently against her chest. “It’s the most wonderful feeling, being a parent. Knowing that this little muffin is mine and Chris’. Like, entirely ours. Because we were still able to use Chris’ sperm and my eggs, Adeline is entirely our child. 100% Doucy”.

“Which is sometimes a bit of a handful” Chris interjects “maybe next time we’ll add a little something else!”

Natalie and Alice Taylor

They met at a nightclub when they were 18 and as Alice says “it was love at first fight.” Natalie giggles at the memory “We weren’t fighting” she says abruptly, “Alice was bartending at a brand new bar that had opened a block away from my office and I was out having drinks with co-workers. Some guy crashed into another and spilled his drink or something and the two got into it.”

“My bouncer was outside dealing with another issue and I tried to break it up myself” Alice admits it wasn’t going very well. “Then all the sudden I see this gorgeous, fiery redhead storm up and start cussing both of them out. They stopped in their tracks, and I stopped in mine. She was the most beautiful woman I had ever seen.” Natalie says that Alice bought her a drink for her heroics and the rest was history. Alice and Natalie have been partners for eight years and bought their second home last January. “We knew we wanted somewhere bigger for Leo to grow up” Leo, Alice and Natalie’s two year old son, was conceived via surrogacy. “You can tell by the hair who’s egg they used” Alice jokes. Leo sits placidly on the carpet playing with an avalanche of blocks and small car toys. “He’s such a happy kid, he was a really easy baby too. Never cried, loved to sleep. He’s wonderful, we’re really lucky.” Natalie beams in the direction on the similarly crimson headed child. Natalie and Alice say that their main motivation for going with a surrogacy program in Ukraine was the cost. “It was really reasonable compared to other programs that we looked at.”

Even though surrogacy Ukraine laws apply to heterosexual married couples for joint custody, the biological parent legally retains all parental rights. “Alice had to apply for guardianship when we brought Leo home, so she wasn’t on his initial birth certificate. I think the part that was really difficult was having to wait a few weeks until we were able to get him home with us. We had to apply for (Leo’s) passport in Kiev at the embassy. DNA tests and the birth certificate as well as some of the medical documents from the IVF and my egg donation were required. It wasn’t as bad as we were both expecting, but at that time, we just wanted to be home with him. Luckily the agency we went through (ilaya) we went through was really amazing and helped us with all of the legal paperwork and stuff that we needed to get him home with us.”

Ulyana, A Surrogate

“My sister was unable to have babies. I remember it being so hard for her, seeing her go through all that heartbreak was really difficult for me.” Ulyana, a 24 year old woman, chose to become a surrogate when she was just 20 years old. “I was not with an agency at that time, but instead performed the pregnancy as a favor to my sister. She was so happy. I saw that in holding her child, her life was complete.” Ulyana recalls how beautiful that moment was, seeing her sister with the child she never thought she could have. She also talks about how much she enjoys being pregnant. “It is a wonderful feeling, having a child in your belly. Knowing that you are caring for it and being able to give the gift of healthy life to the child and it’s family.” Ulyana has since helped two other families realize the joys of parenthood, and couldn’t be more convicted of her choice to become a surrogate, “Some people are not so nice, I think, when they [find out] what I do to help others, but it is not for them to know. It is not their place. Maybe they have children and don’t understand what it would be like, living in a world without them.” She says that some people she meets can be unkind, but feels like most are just curious. She says that it usually turns out very well when she has a chance to explain to them what an amazing thing she does, and how much she truly enjoys it. “Everybody loves a pregnant woman anyway. We are cute and glow.” Ulyana admits that she does very much enjoy when people come up and touch her belly. When asked if she plans on having children of her own, she laughs and says “maybe when I meet the right man and it is a good time for me. Until them I am much more happy to give the gift of life to another”.

If you’re having trouble conceiving when you’re ready, you’re probably subject to a lot of emotions. From hopelessness and longing to frustration and shame, the important thing to know is that at least one in six couples find themselves exactly where you are right now. Some of them go on to conceive without assistance, but many others explore their options, which includes in-vitro fertilization, or IVF.

Fertility Treatments: Knowing Your Options

When people who are new to the concept of fertility struggles are asked to list their options, they often think of artificial insemination or surrogacy. These are frequently not the first course of action; some women start off with fertility drugs.

Drugs such as Chlomiphene are used to induce ovulation, creating a more reliable cycle where gauging your fertility is simpler. It’s moderately efficacious, with approximately 40% of the women who try it becoming pregnant in the first year. That said, many women have difficulty coping with the side effects, and it can take multiple months-long courses of the drug to work.

Like other fertility treatments, it also increases your chances of giving birth to multiple babies at once.

Intrauterine insemination, or IUI, is chosen by some because it’s quite cheap. It’s frequently used in combination with fertility drugs. During IUI, a catheter is inserted into the cervix, and semen is passed through this tube into the uterus as a more direct delivery method. Unfortunately, it’s estimated that this procedure is only effective about 5-15% of the time.

[bs-quote quote=”“Forget about all the reasons why something may not work. You only need to find one good reason why it will.”” style=”default” align=”left” author_name=”Dr. Robert Anthony”][/bs-quote]

Gamete intrafallopian transfer, alternatively and aptly called GIFT, is a very costly procedure in which the combination of sperm and egg are injected into the fallopian tubes. It has a decent success rate, but can be cost prohibitive and invasive when compared to modern IVF.

What About IVF?

IVF involves the combination of sperm and egg, which is grown into an embryo outside of the body. This embryo (or embryos) are then transferred to the uterus. Yet the actual planting of the embryos could be considered quite far along in the IVF process. As you’re researching the most affordable IVF plans, you’ll find different combinations of steps and supplemental therapies in various packages.

First, if you need assistance ovulating, you’ll do a course of drugs like gonadotropins. Next, your fertility doctor will use an ultrasound and a very slender needle to extract your eggs. From there, your eggs are fertilized with the sperm of your choosing and incubated in a laboratory. If fertilization between your particular egg and sperm combination is a challenge, your treatment may include intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) to help things along.

Your fertility clinic will select the most viable embryos and implant these into your uterus. The success rate is pretty great for women 35 and under, with 40% carrying to term after their IVF treatment.

If you have a spouse or partner, now’s the time to begin discussing fertility treatments. Success is always more likely the younger you are, even though there are still treatments that could be successful for women over 35. With patience, research, and a positive attitude, becoming a parent is becoming increasingly accessible thanks to fertility treatments like IVF.

Moms will always do what’s best for their babies, and that includes looking for ways to improve the quality of their breast milk. While breast milk already contains all the nutrients the baby needs, milk with more fat content has more calories, which is essential for kids to gain weight.

Understanding Breast Milk

Mothers only produce one kind of milk, but it goes through three different stages – colostrum, transitional milk and mature milk.

Colostrum is the milk produced in the first few days after birth. It’s yellowish in color, creamier, and rich in nutrients and immunoglobulins that provide crucial immunity for the baby. Transitional milk follows and has high fat and lactose levels and water-soluble vitamins.

The final type of milk produced is mature milk. It consists of two types – foremilk and hindmilk. Foremilk is what the baby first draws during feeding. It’s usually thin, watery, full of vitamins and protein but low in fat content. Hindmilk appears towards the latter part of the session and is rich in fat content and high in calories.

Tips for Making Breast Milk Fattier

Choose The Fats You Eat Carefully.

Your diet will have little effect on your breast milk, but it will have a significant impact on your health. However, what you eat will also affect your baby, so you need to be careful with regards to your fat intake.

To keep your baby healthy, opt for the monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats found in vegetable oils, fish, nuts and seeds. These types of fat are crucial for the development of your baby’s brain and vision.

Mix up Your Feeding Sessions.

There are two ways to get your baby drinking more of the fattier hindmilk. One is to nurse longer, and the other is to increase feeding sessions. Nursing your baby longer ensures that he or she will get both types of milk.

Some babies don’t like to nurse for a long time so to ensure your child gets more hindmilk, try to keep feeding times close together. Lactation experts also recommend not switching breasts until the baby stops suckling.

Pump It Up.

If you believe that your baby isn’t getting enough fat, use a pump to separate the foremilk from the hindmilk.

Pumping milk out before you feed your baby will ensure that he or she will be drinking more hindmilk. Try to pump out a third of the milk you would usually pump from a full session to remove the foremilk.

Go For a Breast Massage.

Massaging your breasts gives the same effect as when you compress it – hindmilk will go out more quickly. One major difference though is that you can massage your breast before and during breastfeeding sessions while compressions are done only during feeding time. Finding the right way to massage your breast is a process of trial and error. But it’s best to massage it carefully to avoid sore breast.

Take a lecithin supplement.

A lot of moms have discovered that taking a sunflower lecithin supplement is great in making milk richer and fattier. Lecithin helps unclog milk ducts by lessening breast milk’s viscosity and boosting the amount of polyunsaturated fatty acids, making the milk more slippery and easy to express. More importantly, the sunflower lecithin supplement is safe to take and affordable.

It’s important to remember that both foremilk and hindmilk are crucial to a baby’s development. But if you want to ensure that your newborn will be gaining weight, try to make your milk fattier.

If I told you that pregnancy hormones tend to make pregnant women a bit touchy, your reaction would go in one of two ways. The first reaction would be a rolling of the eyes with a “well, duh!’ type of expression. The second reaction would be a very huffy and emphatic ‘no they don’t, you’re hormonal!’ Now from those reactions guess which one represents the non-bun-in-the-oven populace? Whether you want to admit it or not pregnancy is all about the hormones. They swing, they weep, they rage, but mostly they increase.

Why On Earth?!

Now, why on earth would the female system insist on creating such a potent cocktail of craze-inducing hormones in this the most magical time of a woman’s life? Well, each hormone has a job to do during the pregnancy or delivery and low levels or missing hormones can endanger the normal, healthy processes involved in gestation and childbirth. In my prenatal classes most of my students are able to name only three reproductive hormones: estrogen, progesterone and testosterone. Of the three one is thought of as being mainly a man’s hormone, but believe it or not the weaker sex does have levels of testosterone present in their systems at varied levels most of the time. Of course testosterone is just one of the minor hormones, and by no means plays the leading role.

Keeping The Reproductive System On Track

Estrogen and Progesterone keep the entire female reproductive system in balance and on track. During pregnancy progesterone plays the major roll keeping pregnancy rolling smoothly along, while estrogen takes the back seat. Progesterone is not alone in this effort however. For the first 10 weeks before the placenta is nicely formed and producing high levels of progesterone, the hCG hormone stands in, protecting the fertilized egg and supporting the new pregnancy until progesterone levels rise.

As an expectant mother you can thank the hCG hormone for many things: a positive home pregnancy test (home tests use hCG levels to diagnose pregnancy) and sustaining pregnancy for the first few weeks as well as other not-so-great things like morning sickness and fatigue. Most women, if they stopped to think about it, would have a love-hate view of the hCG hormone.

The Star Pregnancy Hormones

Estrogen might not be the star player in pregnancy, but it does not mean that it fades into nothingness. Estrogen levels also rise during pregnancy. The general increase in womanly hormones across the board is what creates the possibility of touchy mommies to be. Other lesser known pregnancy hormones like relaxin, play a major role in labor, but begin their work during pregnancy. Relaxin hormones help to relax the joints and increase space.

This is great for childbirth as this little hormone helps make your normally rigid inflexible pelvis open to its widest expanse allowing baby to leave the womb and enter your arms. These hormones also create breast milk, colostrum, change the color of your skin, prohibit preterm labor, relax your uterine muscles allowing them to stretch as baby grows and a million other things baby demands.

You’ll Look Back And Laugh!

Just remember, you will someday look back and laugh at those times your family was afraid of you. For the time being get some extra rest and let friends and family know what treats are most likely to appease you until the baby arrives and your hormones return more or less to normal.

Pregnancy Headache Coping Tips

A pregnancy headache can range from uncomfortable to down right painful, especially if they are migraines. But never fear, there are tips that will help you get relief and comfort. The most common types of headaches experienced during pregnancy are tension headaches. Tension headaches have been described by some as a tightening pressure on both sides of the head. Migraines are less common than tension headaches during pregnancy and they are far more painful. Migraines can sometimes be accompanied by sensitivity to light and sound, nausea and blurred vision.

Causes of Pregnancy Headaches

Unfortunately, the occasional headache during pregnancy is quite common among expecting mothers. Some of the culprits include:

  • hormone changes
  • lack of sleep
  • changes in blood circulation
  • dehydration
  • low blood sugar
  • stress
  • certain foods
  • bad posture

Manage the Pain of a Pregnancy Headache

Just because headaches during pregnancy are common, it doesn’t mean you have to throw your hands up in defeat. There are ways to manage and reduce the frequency of headaches. When you get a pregnancy headache, place a cold or warm compress on the base of your neck or on the sides of your head to relieve tension and pressure. Taking a warm bath or shower can relax your muscles and relieve the stress that contributes to tension headaches.

If you are suffering with a migraine, try lying in a dark, quiet room with an ice pack on your forehead and temples. Give yourself a neck and shoulder massage. Massage can relieve tension, improve circulation and loosen knotted muscles. If you can spare the cash to pay for a back massage, that’s even better. If you do get a professional massage, make sure the masseuse is licensed to administer pregnancy massages.

It’s best to stay away from all medicines when you’re pregnant. However, in some instances, especially when you suffer with debilitating migraines, medications may not be avoidable. If this is the case, talk to your doctor so she can help you decide which medication poses the least risk to your unborn fetus. Never take any medicines, including over the counter meds, without the consent of your physician.

Pregnancy Headache Prevention

If you want to reduce the likelihood of getting a headache during pregnancy, eat small, healthy frequent meals and limit your intake of simple carbohydrates like white bread, sugar, white rice and white crackers. Simple carbohydrates digest rapidly in the bloodstream and cause your blood sugar levels to spike. An anti-headache diet should consist mostly of whole grains, lean meats, fish, eggs, poultry, vegetables, fruits, legumes and dry beans.

Maintain good posture throughout pregnancy. This can be hard to do, especially in the last trimester when your center of gravity is the worst. Drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration. It is recommended that you drink half your body weight in ounces of water daily – more if you’re physically active or consume large amounts of caffeine. If you suffer with migraines, stay away from trigger foods such as MSG, aged cheese, nitrates, preserved meats (hot dogs, bologna, smoked sausage, etc.) artificial sweeteners, sulfites and alcohol. Finally, if you relax and kick your feet up more, you can reduce stress and lower your chances of suffering with headaches during pregnancy. If your pregnancy headache is accompanied by blurry vision, pain in the abdomen, or swelling of the hands and face, contact your doctor immediately.

Breastfeeding And Diabetes

If you are a diabetic and have a baby, there are certain things to keep in mind while you are breastfeeding. First of all, studies have proven that breastfeeding a child help to prevent type 1 diabetes development. Babies who breastfeed until at least six months will be at a lower risk for type 1 diabetes. Doctors generally suggest that moms breastfeed their children until nine to twelve several weeks.

Doctors are unsure if good effects of medical come from special nutrition in the colostrum (the special milk from mothers) or if it because babies who are breastfed often grow at a much more regular pace than those who are fed from cow’s milk. Newborns weaned on cow’s milk often experience progress spurts rather than the steady growth associated with mother’s milk. If you are a diabetic, consider breastfeeding to help lower your child’s chances of diabetes due to genetic predisposition.

breastfeeding-and-diabetes

Breastfeeding a baby is not only positive for the babies, but also for the moms. Breastfeeding can help mother’s weight loss, and it is particularly important for diabetic women to take care of a healthy weight. Some mothers find it easier to enable them to manage their diabetes because their glucose levels stay more regular and they have a remission of some symptoms while breastfeeding.

Breastfeeding means that you have to be extra careful of your nutrition, so be certain to see your doctor or dietitian to create a meal plan that will work for you. It is important to eat regular snacks when you are breastfeeding because you want to keep your blood glucose levels constant. You will need to increase your caloric intake by about five-hundred calories every day to meet your baby’s healthy needs. You can do this merely by drinking a glass of milk every time you breastfeed, which will keep you both hydrated and packed with nutritional vitamins.

To be able to maintain a balanced diet, experts suggest that mothers eat 20% of calorie consumption from protein, 40-60% from carbohydrates, and 30-40% from fruits and vegetables. Checking up on all of these food groups will make sure that your body has the nutrients to provide for the baby.

As a breastfeeding mother, low blood sugar is an increased risk. However, by eating a healthy diet full of legumes, whole grains, other healthy foods, you will be able to keep low blood sugar at bay. Drinking a lot of fluids is also an important part of having a wholesome blood glucose level. Most importantly, screen your blood glucose levels and record the results.

Some diabetic mothers may find that their milk comes in late, between two days to two weeks. In the meantime, use a breast pump and speak to your doctor to establish the best solution for you and your baby. Even kids who are too weakened to breastfeed can be fed breastmilk that has been pumped.

Breastfeeding is a bonding experience for mothers and babies. Diabetes sufferers can breastfeed and gain even more benefits than the emotional closeness, such as lowered diabetes risk for the baby, and improved diabetes control for the mother.

The Dangers Of Black Mold When You Are Pregnant

Black mold is dangerous for every single person but its damaging effects are even more serious when referring to a pregnant woman. As you are pregnant, mold growth is something that has to be avoided where you live since the negative effects will be much more serious than what many belief. You surely want to remain healthy during pregnancy and this does not only include what you do to take care of yourself in a direct manner.

The really huge problem is that mold growth as a woman is pregnant can lead towards miscarriage or birth effects. Mold is not just dangerous for the mother. It is also dangerous for the fetus. Exposure is a huge factor in the development of child asthma as it will attack the respiratory system.

We saw different reports that highlighted the fact that toxic mold was responsible for sudden infant death syndrome. This was noticed when exposure took place as the child was inside the mother’s womb and even after the birth.

Toxic mold exposure can lead towards miscarriage. Besides the fact that this is a situation you will want to avoid, we should also mention that complications can appear with the pregnancy as the health of the woman is affected. Nose bleeding and abdominal pain become quite common.

The huge problem with toxic mold exposure is that the symptoms can easily be attributed to something else. In some cases doctors simply recommend that the woman uses a weight loss diet plan in order to increase energy and deal with the fatigue that appears when the truth is that we are faced with poisoning that is caused by black mold.

Exercise During pregnancy

It is really important that you are careful about the possibility of being faced with black mold exposure when you hear the news that you are pregnant. The truth is that most people that do have mold problems actually suspect it but they do nothing about it. Since we are talking about the health of both the woman and the child, if this is something that you suspect, you will need to instantly call professionals that can test the home. If mold presence is detected, it has to be removed completely.

Obviously, it is possible to remove mold alone, without the help of a professional. However, since we are talking about pregnancy, this is not at all recommended. There are two reasons why you should not do this alone:

  • The professional can guarantee that the entire mold infestation is removed. That is not something that you can do alone.
  • Removing mold can be physically challenging. You are pregnant so you should avoid all the activities that are too physically demanding.

Good news comes from the fact that black mold can easily be removed from absolutely any home that is infested. This is not a difficult process. At the same time, it is quite cheap so you should not worry too much about the investment you are about to make, even if you cannot think about money when your health and the health of the baby are at stake.

Overview

There is no single magic pill that will help you slim down after giving birth. While most women are eager to get back into a better shape and figure after pregnancy, you shouldn’t start dieting immediately after delivery. Your body still requires time and energy to recover. Health experts recommend that you should give yourself at least six weeks before you start cutting down you calories in an effort to lose some weight. If you are breastfeeding, wait until your baby is two months old before you start dieting. Here are some healthy diets for post pregnancy weight loss.

Fruits and Vegetables

Fruits and vegetables are great sources of vitamins, minerals and fiber which are all essential in aiding post pregnancy weight loss. According to Heather Mangieri, RD, spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, adding plenty of fruits and vegetables in your diet will help you lose the extra pounds because they keep you fuller for longer and curb cravings for unhealthy foods. In addition, they will help you cut back on your calories you consume on a regular basis.

Whole Grains

While whole grains may appear too heavy for a meal, they have been proven to be effective in weight control. In reference to Marjorie Nolan, Cohn, a nutritionist expert from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, unlike other grains, whole grains have more fiber, which is renowned for filling. Human lack the enzymes required in the breakdown of fibers and thus move through your digestive tract undigested. This provides the bulk that keeps you fuller for longer, and thus you are more likely to eat less over the course of the day.

Lean Protein

Some of the best sources of lean protein for post pregnancy weight loss include nuts, tofu, soy, seeds, lentils, beans and lean beef like a round or tenderloin cut, chicken, fish, turkey, eggs, low fat milk, cheese and yoghurt. You should consider some snack ideas such as plain yoghurt, fresh fruits and cereal. According to Judy Caplan of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, learn red meats like fillet, fish and seafood are good sources of protein even though they contain omega-3 fatty acids. You can get lean protein from whole grains, seeds, nuts and vegetables if you are a vegetarian.

Dairy

Studies indicate that dairy products such as milk, cheese, and yoghurt can be helpful in post pregnancy weight loss without drastically cutting back your calorie intake. In one study, obese adults who took a high-dairy diet lost more weight and fat than their counterparts who took low-dairy diet with equal amounts of calories. According to researcher Michael Zemel, PhD, professor of nutrition and medicine at the University of Tennessee, consuming dairy-rich diet can double the rate of weight loss with the same levels of calorie restriction. Choose low-fat or skim milk which also contains iron necessary for fighting postpartum symptoms.

Anti-inflammatory Foods

During pregnancy, your body undergoes through stress and trauma that can last for months after delivery. These prompt your immune system to respond through internal inflammation, which is best dealt with by consuming anti-inflammatory foods or drinks like berries, green tea, turmeric and garlic among others. You should avoid processed foods because they are rich in sugar, which can increase inflammation or raise blood sugar.

Vitamins And Minerals

The following vitamins and minerals are very essential in a woman’s post pregnancy weight loss diet:

  • Vitamin A: It’s depleted through breastfeeding. Best sources include kale, carrots, spinach and sweet potatoes.
  • Vitamin C: Just like vitamin A, a lot of vitamin C passes through breast milk. Foods rich in vitamin C include broccoli, red peppers, oranges, and other fruits.
  • Vitamin D: This is essential in keeping your bones and teeth strong. Your body produces vitamin D when your skin gets exposed to sunlight. Alternative sources include fortified milk, mushrooms and eggs.
  • Vitamin E: It improves circulation and can be obtained from seeds, nuts and eggs.
  • Potassium: It is a blood lowering nutrient that can be obtained from bananas, beans and Lima.
  • Calcium: It strengthens bones and teeth. It can be obtained from low-fat dairy products, leafy greens, peas, beans, and figs.

Conclusion

If your goal is to lose weight after pregnancy, you shouldn’t opt for a very restrictive diet. Your body still requires energy to function properly as you continue taking good care of your bundle of joy. As you adjust to new daily schedules after delivery, you should not let stress or sleepless nights develop food worries. Take it easy and eat all that is good for your health. It doesn’t have to take you longer than a few months to get back to your pre-pregnancy weight if you follow these diet guidelines and engage in regular exercises. However, it can take you a little longer if you gained more weight than what your doctor recommended

How to Treat Your Baby Bump Right with no difficulty

There is no other way to call pregnancy than a blessing and opportunity to bring new life into this world. It is one of the greatest privileges a person can have. However, it is also a very delicate period which demands certain lifestyle changes and much care, so that both the mother and the baby turn out alright.

Pregnancy sometimes intimidates both women and men. But, as any other responsibility, it can be carried with ease if you learn a few tips of how to treat your baby bump right.

pregnancy

Keep Your Pregnancy in Good Shape

Pregnancy doesn’t mean that you need to give up working out. Quite the contrary, physical activity will help you feel better, ease discomfort, be stronger and prevent huge weight gains, so we can easily say it is very beneficial to commit yourself to light exercise every day. You will need to slightly adjust your routine, though. While there are some usual workout routines for pregnant women, we strongly recommend consulting with your doctor first.

Balance Your Nutrition

Having a balanced diet is another good way to make life better for you and a baby, but before telling you what this diet consists of, let us first mention what you should avoid. If you are consuming partially cooked fish and eggs, you are running a risk of getting an infection. Try eating no more than three servings of fish weekly and ditch swordfish entirely. You should increase the amount of vegetables and fruit. Don’t drink more than two coffees per day and keep artificial sweeteners to a minimum.

pregnancy

Take Care of Your Skin

During pregnancy, you body is submitted to major changes and one of the body parts that is most affected by this turbulence is your skin, so you should treat it right. For starters, you should regularly moisturize your abdomen to prevent stretch marks. Natural moisturizers should always have advantage over chemical ones, which are harmful to the baby. Sunscreen will keep you protected from skin damage and melanoma, just be sure to pick the right SPF. Consult your dermatologist if you develop a “pregnancy mask” or something of the sort on your face.

Keep a Positive Attitude

Last but not least, being optimistic and positive will be immensely helpful during these 9 long months. In order to achieve a sunny state of mind you should contemplate how blessed you are, and enjoy your state, rather than focus on the obstacles. Sure, you will change, the way you dress will change. But it doesn’t mean you should become an Uggs and sweatpants recluse. You will most certainly have a glow around you in this period, the greatest accessory of all. Whatever you wear, don’t hide your belly. Flaunt it – stripes work great! It’s important to stay comfortable as well as stylish. Put aside your skinny jeans for the time being, and grab some trendy maternity jeans. Reinvent yourself in a fun and comfy way.

If you follow this advice, your life will be much easier and your baby will be happier. Few troublesome months will eventually pass and once you become parent, they will be just a distant memory overshadowed by the joy your family provides you.
